Academic Classes
During the school year we have regular classes for children 4 years upwards. there are a few 3 years old but they are the exception.
The older teens like to have fun while learning. I teach the teens and others instruct the younger children. I try to change in my approach to teaching. I remember being too hard on my oldest son but it was with good intention. So I let the kids have fun, even keep their cell phone if they do not watch too many cartoons. I encourage them to use it to find the things we are discussing.
Physical Meal
Our children are given two free meals each day. Breakfast could be hot cereal and bread with Peanut butter, and Lunch is most always Rice Protein. One of our partner FMSC Feed My Starving Children help provide us a yearly allotment so that we can give a nutritious meal. We sometimes have Soup and or rice and chicken.
Children Are Unique
We not only teach the children academics but also content from the Bible. Bible passages such as Psalm 23 are memorized and sometimes I share the history of it.
One thing I had to learn is that children have as many problems as adults. To the children, their problems seem more real than adults realize. Another learning curve for me is that each child has a story behind his/her innocent face. One child who was having difficulties reading, after speaking with her mother realize that the trauma she went through.
Praying for Children
I sometimes offer anointing and prayer for individuals who come voluntarily. Last Sunday school about 22 children came forward for anointing and prayer. I read how YESHUA ( Jesus ) would encourage families to bring their children to Him so He would lay His hands on them. I find something else also, that the children who seems to be most challenged seem to receive less attention from their parents or caregiver which helps to exacerbate their situation.
Reading
I encourage the use of the Bible in learning to read. I believe that the word have spiritual value which will help the student. I also make the same request with my English class. On Saturdays at 3:pm I give free English class with adults and children attending. I ask each student to memorize a verse either in Spanish or Haitian Creole, then learn the same verse in English.
